What the game is

Grump the Baby Destroyer is a browser-based 3D survival-horror game. You play a baby left behind in an empty school. Runs entirely in the browser — no build step, no backend, no install — and multiplayer is peer-to-peer, so it works the same way hosted on GitHub Pages as it does locally.

Everything in the school is procedural: textures are painted into canvases at load time, models are built from boxes, and the school itself is a pure function of a random seed — the same seed always builds the exact same building, which is what makes co-op possible without a real server.

The premise

You are a baby. Everyone else went home. There is a janitor named Bob who wants you back in your classroom and will hurt you if he catches you out of one at night. There is a boy in green dungarees named Grump who wants to ask you questions — and who, after day 4, stops asking and starts hunting. There is a generator that will not feed itself, a teacher's to-do list that never runs out, and other toddlers who need carrying home before dark — some of them hurt, and needing a plaster from the nurse's office before they can go home at all. There is a gym teacher named Jerry who will make you exercise whether you like it or not, a lunch lady named Meredith who feeds you if you can keep a beat, and — once, every run — three older kids who corner you in a hallway and find out the hard way that Grump doesn't like bullies.

The loop

Day

Search the school, feed the generator, clean up messes, carry other toddlers home (patching up any that are hurt), and work through Mrs. Honeywell's list. Length depends on difficulty (3m25s–5m).

Night

You cannot leave. Your classroom is safe only while the lights are on. Bob patrols. Grump watches (until he turns). Length depends on difficulty (2m30s–3m35s).

Repeat for 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 or 20 nights — or Endless. See Nights & Difficulty for the exact numbers, and The Night / The Day for what happens in each phase.

Quick start

  1. Click the game canvas to lock your mouse pointer — the game will not respond to WASD until it is locked.
  2. Check Mrs. Honeywell's list (Tab) and the map (M).
  3. Search containers for fuel and parts, get the generator running in the boiler room, and keep an eye on your tummy.
  4. When it gets dark, get to your classroom and keep the lights on. Hide in lockers, under desks, or in boxes if something is coming.
  5. Talk to Grump if you see him — ignoring him all day costs more resentment than answering does.
