Grump's Questions

Spoiler warning. This page lists every question Grump can ask, every answer, exactly what it costs, and his reply. If you want to find these yourself in the game, stop reading now.

The design rule

There is no correct answer. Every option costs resentment — some less than others, but never zero — and refusing to talk to him at all costs the most of all: +6 resentment at the following nightfall if you never spoke to him that day, on top of the night's base amount. See Grump for the full resentment formula.

How a question is picked

When you talk to Grump, the game first works out his current tier from his resentment total, then picks a random question from that tier that you haven't been asked yet this run (falling back to any question at or below that tier, then any question in the tier, then any question at all, once you've exhausted the pool). Once he's turned, he refuses outright with lines like "No more questions." / "I have finished asking." / "The asking part is over." / "You had your questions."

He remembers. Once turned, about 45% of the time when he speaks near you, he quotes one of the last 8 answers you gave him verbatim — 'You said "…"'.

Every question, in order of tier

Cost is shown as resentment added if you pick that answer.

Calm (resentment 0–21)

Hallo. Are you having a nice last day?
−6“Yes! Very nice!”Nice. Everyone had a nice one. I asked you about YOURS.
−5“Not really.”Then you should have gone home. Like the others did.
−8“...”Silence. From a baby. That is a choice you have made.
Do you like my dungarees? My mum picked them.
−5“They are great.”You did not even look. I watched you not look.
−7“They are okay.”Okay. My mum picked them. Okay.
−9“Who is your mum?”Do not ask about my mum.
What is your favourite thing in the whole school?
−5“The playground.”Outside. Of course. Away from me.
−5“The library.”Books. You would rather read than talk. Noted.
−8“You are!”Do not lie to me. I can hear when it is a lie.
Would you like to be friends? Proper ones?
−6“Yes please.”Proper friends do not say please. They just are.
−9“Maybe later.”Later. Later. Everyone says later and then the bus comes.
−10“I have friends.”Where. Point at one. I will wait.

Uneasy (22–49)

Why did they all get picked up and you did not?
−6“They forgot me.”Nobody forgets. They decide, and then they call it forgetting.
−8“I do not know.”You do know. You are just not saying it out loud yet.
−12“Why did nobody pick YOU up?”That was a very interesting thing to say to me.
Have you been in the boiler room? Be honest.
−7“Yes.”You went to the loud room instead of coming to me.
−9“No.”I can smell the diesel on you. Try again.
−8“Why do you ask?”Because I ask things. That is what I do. You answer things. Allegedly.
Do you think I am a nice boy?
−7“Very nice.”You said that too fast. Fast means frightened.
−9“I think so?”You THINK. So there is a version where I am not.
−8“I do not know you.”No. You do not. And whose fault is that.
Where are you sleeping tonight?
−9“My classroom.”Your classroom. You have already decided which door I am on the wrong side of.
−7“I am not going to sleep.”Everyone sleeps. That is the nice part.
−11“Somewhere safe.”Safe. Safe from what, exactly. Say the word.

Cold (50–74)

The little ones. Are you keeping them from me?
−10“They are just safe with me.”Safe. There is that word again.
−12“No.”I counted them yesterday. I count very well.
−9“Yes.”At last. Something true. It does not help you, but it was true.
Do you know what my whole name is?
−11“Grump.”That is the short one. The one they let children use.
−9“No.”You will. It is written on things, if you look at the right things.
−13“I do not want to know.”Wanting has nothing to do with it.
When the lights go out, who do you think about?
−10“Bob.”BOB. He carries a mop. I carry something else.
−12“You.”Good. Keep doing that. Keep me on.
−14“Nobody.”Nobody. Nobody. I will remember nobody.
If I asked you to turn the generator off, would you?
−11“No.”No. To me. Out loud. In my school.
−13“Yes, if you wanted.”Do not offer me things you will not do. I will hold you to it.
−10“Why would you want that?”Because I like it better when everyone is the same amount of blind.

Hostile (75+)

How many nights do you think you get?
−14“As many as I need.”Need. Listen to it. NEED.
−12“I do not know.”I do. I have the number. I am not telling you the number.
−16“Enough to get out.”Out. There is no out. There is only the yard, and I am taller than the fence.
Say sorry. Just say it and this all stops.
−15“Sorry.”You do not know what for. That is not a sorry, that is a noise.
−14“Sorry for what?”For all of it. For the bus. For the door. For being still here.
−18“No.”Ohhh. Ohhhh. Good. Good. I prefer this.
Last one. Do you want to go home?
−16“Yes.”So did they. So did every single one of them.
−15“No.”Then stop running to the lit rooms. Stay in the dark with me.
−20“I want you to leave me alone.”That is the meanest thing anybody has ever said in this building.

Things he says without being talked to

Grump mutters lines when he notices you across a room, or (once turned) while hunting. They get more pointed by stage:

StageLines
0"Hallo." · "There you are." · "Come and talk." · "I saw you."
1"You walked past me." · "I am still here." · "Talk to me." · "You are busy. I noticed."
2"You are always leaving." · "I counted the lights." · "It is nearly dark." · "Stop tidying and look at me."
3"I know where you sleep." · "The little ones like me." · "Turn around." · "You cannot carry all of them."
4 (turned)"Found you." · "No more questions." · "Come here." · "Stay still. STAY STILL."
